Hobby purchases

Its that time again, not miniatures though... just hobby related stuffs. 

Trying out a flat black primer slightly more expensive than the "red fox" ones I always buy, and daler rowney budget brushes. Contain a 10/0 brush for edge highlights, not sure if they are the ones recommended by Skanwy over at Ward save.

Went to Daiso and bought some cheap terrain materials, 4 pieces of mdf for $2 and 28 pieces of round, 3 pieces of rectangle plastic grid for fences and flooring. Total = $6. Could not find the type of clay I saw at another Daiso...

TALE OF 6 ARMIES: Crazyrat SPEARHEAD

Enrgie started Tale of 6 armies 3wks ago to encourage us to paint our armies. After the success of Tale of 6 armies 1st challenge. Tale of  6 armies: Spearhead was started, participants had to commit 1 vehicle/walker/MC and completely built + paint it before 21st June 2010.

Distractions

Did not complete my 9+1 models for the Tale of 6 armies event organized by Enrgie. I just managed to basecoat the models and half paint a test model.  I will continue to work on them and post the finished models pictures once they are done. 

I blame distractions, like "Battlefield bad company 2", "CSI",  "mousehunt" and my constant slacking for not meeting the date line. Anyway I painted other stuffs with pictures. Click the link below

WIP Death coy

Enrgie started Tale of 6 armies  to get us painting. I committed 9 death coy and 1 chaplain for the painting event. Here are my progress:

Some tools I used:

Vallejo still water

Bought this to cover up the skull and holes on the realm of battle gaming board. Quite expensive for such a small bottle as the liquid will shrink after drying and you need to pour more to cover the holes evenly. After covering all the holes, i'm left with around 20% of the 200ml. Took 24hrs to dry, but it took 48hrs to fully dry & shrink.

Testing new modelling stuffs not good for the wallet :( 

I'll use the last 20% to make some pond or swamp or maybe use it on model bases.

Mr. Surfacer 1000 primer on 28mm miniatures

I always prime my models using Nippon flat white spray paint or 'Red fox' flat black acrylic spray paint. Problem encountered using these 2 budget spray paints are I had a hard time painting on my base coat. I solved the problem by using thicker and more coats for my base coat which result in the models looking quite thick with paint even before I start with other colours.

I never believe in using primer paints for 28mm miniatures since they are quite small, any model casting imperfections can be easily painted over or repair using green stuff. I always think primers are use for finding errors (holes/improper sanded mold lines etc...), covering the errors and undercoat, for bigger models. Also primer paints sold by miniature companies are very expensive...

Anyway I went reading about primers again and found it helps in paint adhesive. So I decided to try priming some of my GW miniatures with primer paint I have which are intended for gundam models.























Bottom:
Mr. surfacer 1000 (bottle version)
Centre:
Mr. Retarder mild, added into thinner+paint mixture to prevent it from drying too fast when the paint leave the airbrush.
Right:
Mr Color Thinner 400mL. Lacquer based thinner, for lacquer based paints like the Mr. color series.

Some 40k orks

Top:Fixed up some storm boyz, very nice models. Great details and extra bitz, GW plastics really are top-notch.

bottom:Testing Vallejo coarse pumice on this AOBR ork boyz base.

More Gaming board test colour

The more work I did on this 1st test board the worse it look.

Attempting Ice coloured/ash ground (not complete), the recess will be shaded by green ink and edges painting with vallejo ice blue.

Skaven stormvermin test model... very dark I need to learn how to use my camera...
